Mental Health Resources for Veterans During the Holidays

The holiday season, while a time of joy for many, can bring unique challenges for Veterans. From feelings of isolation to the stress of navigating family gatherings, this time of year often amplifies the mental health struggles many Veterans face. Access to mental health resources is crucial during this season and the Veterans Affairs community can support those who have served. The resources listed below can support every Veteran to feel seen, supported, and valued during the holidays and beyond.

AARP Mental Health Center

The AARP Mental Health Center is dedicated to supporting aging adults with content related to addressing coping mechanisms, depression, anxiety, and several other mental health conditions.

As temperatures drop, it can be increasingly difficult to cope with loneliness during the holiday season. In the Mental Health Center, can check out the 13 Free or Low-Cost Things You Can Do Now to Deal With Loneliness. This article provides useful tips on ways to get outside and stay involved in your community. For example, there are many opportunities to volunteer during the holiday season at toy drives, soup kitchens, and other community events. Pet owners should make sure to continue to take their dogs outside for daily walks. Even the cold air can provide an energy boost and makes for a great excuse to stay active. An additional social benefit can come with walking your dog as you create the opportunity to meet other pet owners.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Resources page is another resource for Veterans with mental health challenges. The Mental Health Resources page provides support with anxiety, bipolar, depression, and many more stressors. This page is also home to stories and experiences from Veterans who have benefited from the page’s services, like telehealth therapy and firearm safety training.

VA Caregiver Support Program

The VA Caregiver Support Program provides a whole host of caregiver resources. These include tips and tools for caregivers, networking opportunities, and specific support for caregivers supporting Veterans.
